Under scanner, Maharashtra rights commissioner goes on leave

Even as the Prithviraj Chavan-led Democratic Front government was considering whether or not to ask state human rights commission member Subhash Lalla to step down on moral grounds in connection with his alleged involvement in the multi-crore Adarsh Cooperative Housing Society (ACHS) scam, Lalla has proceeded on long leave. Meanwhile, TOI got no response from state information commissioner Ramanand Tiwari, who the government was also considering asking to quit on similar grounds. According to the 103-member Adarsh list, Lalla's mother Sushila Shaligram is allottee No 8 and daughter Sumeela Sethi is allottee No 53. Onkar Tiwari, Ramanand's son, is allottee No 80. Lalla told TOI, "It's a fact that my mother and daughter are members of the Adarsh society, but we are not involved in the scam. The CBI is probing the scam and we are prepared for an investigation by any agency. Pending the probe, I am proceeding on leave. I have submitted my application to the governor."
