PCMC uses RTI to nail octroi evaders

The Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) had to file an application under the Right to Information Act 2005, to find out the octroi liability of liquor traders in the civic limits. In order to gauge the volume of liquor brought into the civic limits, between 2008-09 and 2009-10, the civic body has applied to the state excise department
for photocopies of the transport passes issued to liquor traders. However, obtaining the photocopies would cost the civic body Rs 2.22 lakh, as per the excise department's demand of Rs 2 per page -- there are 1.11 lakh pages in all. The civic body has now sought the standing committee approval for spending the amount to gather the data. The proposal will be tabled on October 12. Ashok Munde, assistant commissioner and chief of octroi department, said, "We had to apply under the RTI Act as they denied us the information earlier."
