109 workers died at DMRC sites

In reply to an RTI query filed by the People's Union for Democratic Rights (PUDR) in August, the labour department of Delhi government has said that it does not have consolidated figures on the labour deaths reported during the Commonwealth Games preparations. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) had separately filed an affidavit in the high court in September which said that 109 workers had died on its sites during construction of phases I and II. Clearly, these are not factored in by the labour department in its affidavit. Here's the sequence of events: Indrajeet Kumar Jha from the PUDR filed an RTI application on August 12 addressed to the office of the labour commissioner seeking a detailed factsheet on the accidents, deaths, compensation awarded to victims and the families of the deceased at various construction sites of projects related to the Commonwealth Games.
