Urdu Sahitya Akademi under lens for ‘foul play'

RTI queries by a city-based writer have brought to light many financial irregularities in the Urdu Sahitya Akademi over the past five years. The information surfaced when RTI activist Aqeel Shatir filed a second appeal since he had doubts about the answers supplied to his first set of queries. Shatir claimed he filed the query “sensing foul play in the affairs of the Akademi for several years”. The nine seminars and workshops held by the Akademi, five were allegedly held at far-off places like Kutch, Ambaji, Bhavnagar, Surat and Mahuva while four were held in Ahmedabad. The Akademi had hired luxury coaches to take the “audience” to those places but the replies supplied showed only the details of money paid to speakers, who, except for those coming from outside Gujarat, curiously remain more or less the same in all these programmes.Interestingly, a few of the speakers had attended all these functions.
