Corporators skip meetings, fail to vote on vital issues

Information obtained after an RTI query has revealed that several elected representatives of Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) have not been attending important proceedings of general body meetings, despite maintenance of attendance register at the office. Activist Vivek Velankar obtained this information under the RTI Act. He said the attendance of corporators for general body meetings is hardly 60 per cent of the total strength of 149. “The strength further comes down to 15-20 per cent by the end of every meeting.” However, the shocking thing has been the failure of elected representatives to cast their vote on important issues related to development of the city. It was found that 107 members had signed the register for attendance, but only 66 participated in the voting on hawkers policy proposal.
