Cops refuse to reveal criteria for police awards

It seems that the state police department does not want to reveal the criteria for selection or recommendation of officers for the presidential gallantry awards and police medals. This is perhaps apparent from the department's recent reply to an RTI query. "The information relates to government public servants and parting with the information would not serve any public interest... (it) has no relation to any public activity,'' was the reply from director general Suresh Kakkar, to Kamlakar Shenoy's RTI application. Shenoy had, in April, sought information on the grounds on which the police had recommended inspectorDattatraya Shripad Datar for the Police Medal for Meritorious Service. The medal was conferred on Datar and several other IPS and police officials on January 26.
