GU registrar faces ire of info commission

The state information commission is losing its cool over errant public information officers. In the most recent case, the information right enabling body has imposed penalty on and asked the erring official why it should not recommended disciplinary action against him. The officer in question is registrar and public information officer (PIO) of Gujarat University, MS Shah, who despite having being imposed upon with penalties in earlier instances for denying information to citizens, managed to dishonour orders of the state information commission. In a recent order, state's chief information commissioner RN Das has even sought a written explanation from the registrar as to why a "disciplinary action be not recommended against him." The commission insisted that though Shah's was an apt case for imposing penalties under section 20(1) of the RTI Act, the repeated dishonour of the commission's decisions also made it a fit case for a disciplinary action.
