Delhi policemen lack firing practice

Even as the national capital continues to be on the hit-list of terror groups, the Delhi Police has been found wanting for a clear-cut strategy. Headlines Today unearthed damning figures that lay bare a force that could end up inefficient and inaccurate if they were to face a terrorist in the capital. As it happened in Mumbai on November 26, 2008-during one of the worst terror attacks in India-when the police force was caught napping, unprepared to take on the enemy, the situation is no different in Delhi even now. The policemen in Delhi lack basic firing practice. The fact came out in reply to a query under the Right to Information Act. Annual firing practice is regarded as the basic drill for every policeman to keep him fit and accurate to counter any eventuality like a terror attack. But in Delhi some of policemen get to fire just 10 rounds, once in a year. Guarding a vital installation in Delhi, the policemen confessed that they seldom get to practise firing. "We fire just 40 bullets once in a year," said the
policemen on patrol.
