HC: Can't ask govt to frame rules for CIC appointment

Though sympathetic towards the clamour for a transparent procedure in appointing the next Chief Information Commissioner of the country, the Delhi High Court on Wednesday expressed its inability to intervene, saying "such changes can't be initiated by the judiciary." A division bench comprising Chief Justice A P Shah and Justice S Muralidhar
declined to give any directions to the government to change the procedure for appointment of the Chief Information Commissioner, saying it was not in its jurisdiction to lay down criteria in this regard. "Court can't ask the government to frame rules to bring transparency. You can raise the issue before the government and before Parliament," the bench observed while hearing a PIL on the issue.
