Activists approach Delhi HC seeking transparent CIC selection

The issue of transparency in the selection of Chief Information Commissioner will come up before the Delhi high court tomorrow when a petition filed by a group of activists is taken up. In their petition, they have said the post should be advertised, criteria for the same should be publicised and "transparent, non-discriminatory screening procedures" should be adopted in the selection of CIC.

The activists are demanding transparency in the "closed-door" selection process which is done by a committee comprising the prime minister, Leader of the Opposition and a Union minister nominated by the PM. "The supreme court has stated that people selected for the quasi-judicial posts should have judicial or quasi-judicial background. The post of CIC is of same nature but there is no one from judiciary in the commission leave aside the Chief Information Commissioner. As a result, we are getting some absurd decisions," Krishnaraj Rao, one of the petitioners told PTI.
