The Information Commission has sought reports from the State Government and the District Collector, Balangir, on the arrest of a farmer seeking information under the Right to Information (RTI) Act. Taking suo motu cognisance of a report published in this paper titled `Man gets ticket to jail instead of information', the Information Commission asked a detailed report on the incident from Balangir Collector and the Chief Secretary as well.

Gopabandhu Chhatria, a farmer of Jarasinga village under Deogaon block had to pay the price for seeking information from the block office on the construction of check dam under the National Food-for- Work Programme. He was allegedly implicated in a false case by the public information officer of the block and got him arrested by the police. Chhatria is now behind the bars.
