Correspondence between MPs and PSU open to scrutiny: CIC

Correspondence between MPs and public sector units cannot be withheld on the ground of "breach of privilege of Parliament" and is open to scrutiny under the RTI Act, the Central Information Commission has held. The transparency panel turned down a plea of Indian Oil Corporation Ltd (IOCL) refusing to reveal details of its letter sent to Petroleum Minister on the recommendation of three Members of Parliament (MPs)
for reviving a retail outlet. "Though the letters of recommendation have been written by the MPs, the matter did not relate to transaction of business in the Parliament. Therefore, denial of information is untenable," Information Commissioner M M Ansari said.
